If you have a wood sub floor you can over lay with plywood such
as 1/4'' AC. If you have a concrete floor there are several removers at
Home Depot you can use to remove the old glue. If you have the wood sub
floor some times contractor used felt paper before installing the new
floor & the felt is stuck down there which is easily removed. If yo have a
small amount of this black glue & a concrete floor I have used a small
propane torch to heat up the glue & easily scape it off. It all depends on how much money & work you want to do. Good luck....
that is the old glue so you need to scrape that off before
installing the new ones.
get a big scraper with a long handle

It s the old black emulsion glue. And your right , you wont
get it up.Are you doind a peal and stick tile or a full spread glue?
Either way the glue might ( might) react to each other and not stick.
You say your on concrete , so that leaves out putting a new luan board
down. You may have to ''kill'' that glue with a cement compound and skim
over it and let dry.( in a matter of an hour or so depending on temp and
humidity) Them put new gue or self stick tiles down GLl
the 'black tar' is actually a 2 part (powder grain and
chemical) solution glue used for quarry tiles (mostly used in kitchens)
you can glue and tile straight onto this if thickness permits and any
obtrusive lumps and bumps are removed prior to the new work, anyway this
does create a good waterproof base in any case
buy a freakin' HELPER!
